WILKES-BARRE — Sophie R. Malys, 88, passed away Wednesday evening, April 23, 2014 at the Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre.
Sophie was born in Port Griffith on March 28, 1926, a daughter of the late Albert "George" and Mary Pavlica Kolesar. She was a graduate of St. John the Baptist High School in Pittston. She had been employed for many years in the local garment industry and was a member of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. She later was employed at Burger King in Plains Township.
Sophie was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Hudson Road, Plains Township, and a former longtime member of the former St. Joseph's Church, Hudson. Sophie held a great devotion to St. Ann during her lifetime.
She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Sophie loved to cook and bake for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry F. Malys Sr., in 2000; a son, Joseph Malys, in 2005; a grandson, Thomas J. Malys, in 2011; brother, George Kolesar; sisters, Rosalie Kolesar, Mary Robb and Catherine France.
Surviving are her sons Henry F. Malys Jr. and his wife, Esther, Clarks Summit, and Thomas Malys and his wife, Dorothea, Harveys Lake; daughter, Diane Bojackowski and her husband, Paul, Plymouth Township; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother John Kolesar, Buffalo, New York; sisters Jean Zapusek and her husband, Norman, Mountain Top, and Eleanor Schelling, Hopatcong, New Jersey; brother-in-law, Anthony Malys, Wilkes-Barre; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family thanks the Staff at Riverstreet Manor and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the excellent care that was given to Sophie during her stay at the facility.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Ss. Peter & Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains Township. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Schooley Street, Exeter. Friends may call 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
