Stephen Adam Farris Jr.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Stephen Adam Farris Jr., of Alexandria, Va., and formerly of Swoyersville, passed away on Jan. 20, 2014.

He was a resident of The Fairfax. He graduated from West Point Military Academy, class of 1944. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot during World War II and retired after 30 years of service from the U.S. Air Force. His assignments included teaching at the Virginia Military Institute and command of the 48th Combat Support Group at RAF Lakenheath, England. Col. Farris' decorations include the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He is survived by his children, Jeanne Farris, Reston, Va.; Stephen A. Farris III, Newport News, Va.; Bobbie McGowan, Newark, Del.; Susan Farris, Fairfax Station, Va.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Farris; his sister, Loretta Farris; and his brother, Robert Farris.

Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday at The Fairfax, 9100 Belvoir Woods Parkway, Fort Belvoir, Va. Burial with full military honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
