Valentina M. Roman

Valentina M. "Val" (Malencore) Roman, 61, of Route 118, Sweet Valley, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 5, 2012, at the Bonham Nursing Center, Stillwater. She had been in ill health for 6 1/2 years.

Born June 10, 1951, in Berwick, she was a daughter of Charles and Anna (Saluta) Malencore. She and her husband, Patrick E. "Pat" Roman Sr., celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on July 12.

Val was a 1969 graduate of Berwick Area High School and then earned her L.P.N. degree from Luzerne County Community College.

She had been employed as an L.P.N. at the Berwick Hospital Center, The Bloomsburg Hospital, the Meadows Nursing Home in Dallas and had also done private-duty nursing.

Val's passion was nursing. She also was a foster parent for special needs children for the past 20 years and was highly revered and respected by the Luzerne County Children and Youth Agency. She loved spending time with her family and was the matriarch of the family. Everyone's needs were met before hers. She had a loving and caring heart for anyone she met.

She had served two terms on the board for the Northwest Area School District.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, Pat, are her children, Patrick E. Roman Jr., and his wife, Sherri, of Benton; Adam C. Roman, of Benton; Garrett A. Roman and his companion, Julie Hudack, of Berwick; Aaron M. Roman and his wife, Maigyn, of Nescopeck; Christopher Rinehimer, of Plymouth; Jessica Hess and her husband, Lenny, of Wilkes-Barre; Tegann, Jalissa, Keysha, Kayla and Holly Roman, all at home; her grandchildren, Shelbi, Jacob, Miya, Shyanna, Brannon, Jordan, Wyatte, Emily, Chloe, Tristan, Mason; two sisters, Nancy Chappel, of Berwick, Jacqueline Gero, of Plantation, Fla.; two brothers, Philip Malencore, of Berwick; Charles Malencore Jr., of Bloomsburg; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a niece, Jennifer Euval and by a nephew, Neil Smith.

Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (Rt. 487), with the Rev. Raymond Purdy of the Living Word Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Hill Cemetery, Fairmount Township. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11.
