SWOYERSVILLE — Felix P. Wawer, of Swoyersville, the last surviving child of the late Felix and Helen Mataj Wawer, passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2014. He was 88, born on April 27, 1926.

In earlier times Felix was an active member of the Maltby Fire Company for more than 30 years. During those years he held numerous offices within the fire company, but he is best remembered for chairing their annual spring bazaar.

A naval veteran of World War II, Felix served in the Pacific theater. He was a member of the Andrew Lawrence American Legion Post No. 644.

Felix was the oldest active member of the Paradise Social Club, Swoyersville. He was also a member of the Slovak League of America.

Felix was employed by the American Chain and Cable Company for 20 years, and was elected president of the workers' union. After the Exeter plant closed, Felix was employed by Luzerne County as a deputy sheriff for 35 years, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Deputy Sheriffs' Association and the Fraternal Order of Police.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Alberta (Hovan) Wawer; his sisters, Jane "Jennie," Lillian "Lottie" and Helen; and his brothers, Edward, Alex and Clement.

Felix is survived by his son, Felix J. Wawer, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday from the Kopicki Funeral Home, 263 Zerbey Ave., Kingston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Interment will be in the Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.
