WILKES-BARRE — Harold C. Bennett Sr., 89, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Feb. 25, 2014, at Smith Health Care Ltd., Mountain Top, where he had been a resident for some time.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late James and Hazle Getz Bennett. He attended E.L. Meyers High School and was employed at Charles Hatmaker Hauling as a truck driver for several years until his loss of eyesight prevented him from working.
Harold was a former member of First Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre, and was former member of the Local Citizens Band Radio Club. He also proudly served his country in the U.S. Army between the years of 1942 and 1945 during World War II, earning himself several military decorations.
Harold was preceded in death by brothers, Edwin and James; and also by his wives, Mina Polglase and Margaret George.
He is survived by his son, H. Curtis Bennett Jr. and his wife, Cathy, Mountain Top; daughters, Renee and Doris; grandson, Jason, Kingston; granddaughter, Amber Costello and her husband, Joseph, Dallas; and great-granddaughter, Nelia Costello.
Although he lost his eyesight, he never let that stop him from enjoying life, his joys were his grandchildren and sharing good times on his CB radio (going by the handle "General Nuisance"), often helping those who needed help with directions.
The family wishes to thank Smith Health Care's staff for their loving care during Harold's stay there.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. At the family's request, all services will be private.
