WILKES-BARRE — John J. Barnas, 89, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre on Jan. 18, 1925, a son of the late John and Catherine Mary Ofsenko Barnas. He attended Coughlin High School, the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Penn State University.
John was a U.S. Army veteran serving with Company C, 172nd Infantry Regiment, 43rd Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and as a communications chief, B Battery, 469th Corp Artillery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, during the Korean War.
Prior to retirement, he was employed as a senior service engineer in the heavy military electronics division of the General Electric Co. in Syracuse, New York.
John served as chairman for the Brookside League Inc. and as a board member of the Flood Victims Action Committee and the Luzerne County Citizens' Choice Coalition.
He was preceded in death by his sister Anna (Barnas) Hvozdovic.
John is survived by a sister, Marie (Barnas) Grula, Sugar Notch; a brother, Joseph J. Barnas, Allentown; and by several nieces and nephews.
John's family thanks the nurses, aides and staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their caring service.
Private funeral service with military honors was held at the convenience of the family from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home.
