NEW CUMBERLAND — Robert W. Gardner Jr., 85, of New Cumberland, Fairview Township, York County, died Thursday, May 22, 2014, in the Carolyn Croxton Slane Residence, a service of Hospice of Central PA.

He was a retired bread salesman with Stroehmann Bakers, Harrisburg, and a chef with the former Airport Restaurant, Capitol City Airport, Fairview Township.

He was an U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War; a member of Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church, New Cumberland; 50-year member of American Legion Post 974, Fairview Township, where he served in many capacities including past commander, past deputy commander of the American Legion's 22nd District; member of the 40 and 8 Voiture 22; and past treasurer of the West Shore Senior Center, New Cumberland.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Grace Gardner.

He is survived by his wife of more than 61 years, Grace M. (Laux) Gardner; two daughters, Margaret E. Babcock and her husband, David, Liverpool, New York, and Marcia G. Adams, Red Lion; a son, Robert W. Gardner III and his wife, Tammy, Dillsburg; seven grandchildren, Rebecca, Stephen, Bradley, Jennifer, Joseph, Jeffrey and Julia; and a great-granddaughter, Madeline.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Baughman Memorial United Methodist Church, 228 Bridge St., New Cumberland. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in Parthemore Funeral Home & Cremation Services, New Cumberland. Burial with military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township, Lebanon County.
