William J. Kostrzewski, 89, of the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, passed from this life on Sept. 30, 2013, at Little Flower Nursing Home.
He was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Stanley and Maryanna Kostrzewski.
Billy was a twice-wounded combat veteran who served as a machine gunner with the First Army in World War II in Normandy, Sicily, Italy, France, Africa, Germany and Belgium. He was awarded the Purple Heart, four Bronze Stars and a Presidential Unit Citation with Clusters.
""Billy the Gas Man"" was a retired businessman who formerly operated Hillside Service Station in the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre.
Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Pete and John; sisters, Stella Opiela and Mary Wilkes; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Kruzel.
He is survived by children, son William, Miami; son David and his fiancee, Diane Chismar, Murrysville, Pa.; son Joseph and his wife, Donna, Mountain Top; daughter Mary Jo Amaro and her husband, Carlos, Ocala, Fla.; daughter Carol Erickson and her husband, Bill, Akron, Ohio; son Robert and his wife, Nancy, Hanover Township; daughter Kathy Grodoski and her husband, John, Crestview, Fla. He will truly be missed by his seven children; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brother, Stanley, Lansing, Mich.; his sister, Sophie, who resides at Little Flower Manor; brothers-in-law, Paul Wilkes, Shavertown, and William Kruzel, Gaithersburg, Md.; and nieces and nephews.
Billy was a kind, generous and good man of quiet courage who was loved by all.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday from the Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Parish, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. John S. Terry, pastor, will be celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming. Family and friends may call 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
