William R. Shimansky, 77, of Newark, Del., passed away at home on the morning of June 27, 2013.
Born Dec. 6, 1935 in Courtdale, he was a son of the late Stanley and Anna Shimansky.
He served with distinction during the Korean War as a member in the 11th and 82nd Airborne D-wing in the 1950s.
He was employed as a store manager by F.W. Woolworth Co. for 27 years, was a former member of the Elks Club for many years, was recently a member of the American Legion and was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church for 27 years. He enjoyed gardening and learning about history.
William will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, known to offer a generous helping hand to anyone in need.
His legacy lives on through his wife of 53 years, Irene; two children, his daughter, Sharon, her husband, Joseph, and their daughter, Nicole Terranova; and his son, William "Bill" Shimansky, his wife, Juana, and daughter, Ana.
Family and friends are welcome to a viewing from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 345 Bear-Christiana Road, Bear, Del. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Burial will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to either the VFW Post 475, 100 Veterans Way, Newark, DE 19711; or the family's church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
