COURTDALE – Barbara Ann Garey, 51, of Courtdale, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at home surrounded by her family and friends after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born Nov. 5, 1962, in Kingston, Barbara was a daughter of the late Wayne Keith and Dorothy Jane Rodgers.
She was a graduate of West Side Tech where she was a cheerleader and met Ronald Leroy Garey Jr, a football player and eventual loving and devoted husband and father. Barbara was a cheerleader for the Luzerne Lions as well as a member of her homecoming court. Barb and Ron quickly became high school sweethearts and married in 1984.
Barbara was employed as a custodial staff member at Wilkes University for 14 years.
Barbara loved camping, as it was a family tradition. She was an avid fan of the New York Jets and she enjoyed the music of Michael Jackson.
She was truly a loving person and will be greatly missed by everyone.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne K. Rodgers Jr.
Surviving are her husband, Ronald, and sons, Todd and Ronnie, all of Courtdale; sisters, Jayne Rodgers and her spouse, Sherri Houck, Lakewood, New Jersey, Elaine Barber and her husband, Pat, Pringle; brothers, Eddie Rodgers, Edwardsville, and Pete Rodgers and his wife, Debbie, Edwardsville. Barbara is also survived by many nieces, nephews and a large extended family of relatives and friends. Her family was a central part of her life.
She was a member of the Luzerne United Methodist Church for many years and, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church in her honor.
A celebration of Barbara's life with a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in Luzerne United Methodist Church, 446 Bennett St., Luzerne. Friends may call from 5:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church.
