Bessie Horning, 90, beloved mother and grandmother, of Nanticoke, passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, under the care of Commonwealth Hospice at St. Luke's Villa, Wilkes-Barre, following a brief illness.
Born on Nov. 8, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Charles and Pauline Marinakos Manos.
Early in life Bessie worked in her family's business, the Presto Restaurant, Nanticoke. She later returned to live in Brooklyn and was employed at the Purity Restaurant for over 35 years. In 1989 she returned to live in Nanticoke at her home on Church Street.
Bessie's main interest in life was her home and family. She enjoyed cooking and loved watching classic movies.
She was preceded in death by her son, James Neckland and daughters, Paulette and Georgia Horning.
Surviving are four grandchildren, James Horning and his wife, Kelly, Broadway, Ross Township; Michael Horning, Brooklyn, N.Y., Diana Horning, St. Augustine, Fla., and Antoinette Horning, Levittown, Long Island, N.Y.; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, George Manos and his wife, Evelyn; and a sister, Frieda Agripedes, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 8 p.m. from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. James Nash, officiating.
Interment will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the historic Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Visitation will be Monday from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
