Betty Dwyer Obituary

DALLAS — Mrs. Betty Jane (Andrews) Dwyer, 88, of Dallas, formerly of Hanover Township and Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014. Betty was a kind and gentle soul who was loved by all who knew her.

She was born in Hanover Township on June 6, 1925, the daughter of the late John Adam Andrews and Elizabeth Jane (Edwards) Andrews of Plymouth. She was also the granddaughter of the late David and Nellie Jane (Johnston) Edwards, Plymouth, and the late John A. (Andrascik) Andrews and Susan (Fifchak) Andrews, also of Plymouth.

A graduate of Hanover High School, class of 1943, she was employed at the Neisner Brothers Five and Dime Store, Wilkes-Barre, before moving to Ithaca, New York. She was also employed at the Diamond Vending Machine Company in Wilkes-Barre, until her retirement in 1971.

Betty was married to the late John Joseph Dwyer, son of the late John Timothy Dwyer and Catherine (Carroll) Dwyer of Plymouth.

A member of the Dallas United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Colewell Class, Betty was well known and appreciated for her tradition of baking and distributing Christmas cookies to friends, family and neighbors, and was a phone visitor volunteer for over 20 years for Catholic Social Services.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; husband, John; daughter, Betty Jane; brothers, John David Andrews, Plymouth, William Clifford Andrews, Louisiana, David Leonard Andrews, Hanover Township; and a sister, Rita Mae (Andrews) Vonsavage, Hanover Township and Norristown.

Surviving are her son, Ronald John Dwyer, Idaho; daughter, Mary Ellen Jolley and her husband, Robert Jolley, Dallas; two grandchildren, Jason Jolley and Dana Jolley, Dallas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Richard H. Disque Funeral Home, 2940 Memorial Highway, Dallas. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, with interment in the Oaklawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

The family thanks Traditional Home Health and Hospice, Dunmore, and Celtic Hospice and Home Health, Wilkes-Barre, for the professional and compassionate care provided to Betty.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Betty's memory to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 E. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702; or the Dallas United Methodist Church, 4 Parsonage St., Dallas, PA 18612.
