Boatswain's Mate 1st Class David "Rocky" Jones, USN (ret.) died suddenly Friday, July 20, 2012 in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township. He had previously been a patient in Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre Hospital.
BMC Jones was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Norman and Leah White Jones and was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre. He had also received an associate's degree in business and had honorably served with the U.S. Navy for twenty years. He had enlisted in Wilkes-Barre in 1952 and had seen service aboard the following ships: the USS John S. McCain, the USS Dupont, USS Fiske, USS Maloy, USS Blackwood and was discharged while aboard the USS Lowry in 1972. He had also served at the Naval Reserve Center, Hazleton, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, receiving two Bronze Stars, Combat Action Ribbon, two Vietnam Service Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, and five Good Conduct Medals and had recently been approved for the Purple Heart Medal.
Following his military service, he had been employed by Hurst Home Specialties, Wilkes-Barre, and prior to his civilian retirement by the Social Security Administration, Plains Township.
"Rocky" was well-known as an amateur boxer and had been inducted into the Wyoming Valley Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997. He had been a member of the former Christ Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre, and had served on the church's council. He was currently a member and usher at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre, and had been a member of the Laflin Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Norman and Robert Jones.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Walker Jones, at home; daughter, Sandra Shaffer and her husband, Robert, Dallas; son, David W. Jones and his wife, Deborah, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, William, Christopher, Kelsey, Kimberley and Kyle Jones; great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Connor Jones; Tristan Davies and Delaney Jones; brother, Kenneth Jones and his wife, Carol, Wilkes-Barre; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with services at 11 a.m. in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Peter D. Kuritz, pastor, will officiate and interment will be held in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations in Rocky's name be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 190 S. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701 or to the Geisinger Heart Hospital, 1000 E. Mountain Blvd., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
