SCRANTON — Gerald W. Marish died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Regional Hospital in Scranton, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Scranton on Nov. 9, 1957. He was a son of the late Sally Matylewicz Palmer and the late Milton "Jeff" Marish.

Jerry grew up on the Matylewicz farm in Lake Winola with his mom; grandparents, Adam and Helen Matylewicz; his six uncles; and two aunts.

He was a graduate of Tunkhannock Area High School, class of 1976, and joined the U. S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany for eight years. Upon his return to the United States, he eventually found his way back to Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Maryland and Keystone College. He was employed as a supervisor at Catholic Social Services, Scranton, for the last 23 years – a job he truly loved.

He also loved his wife, Janet, his family, friends and his dog, Boris. Jerry was an avid gardener and enjoyed cheering on his New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Jack Palmer, and his grandparents, and many beloved uncles, aunts, and cousins.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Janet Schmidt Marish, Clarks Summit; stepmother, Ruth Marish, Clarksville, Tenn; brother, John Palmer and Sandra, Lake Winola; sisters, Colleen Ell and David, Tunkhannock; Stephanie Jones and David, Lake Winola; Uncle Bob and Aunt Barb Matylewicz; Aunt Thelma Shebby; his Shebby cousins who were like siblings to him, Lenny, Lynore, Janet, Eileen, Randy and Philip; his in-laws; and many other special aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday from St. Mary of the Lake, Lake Winola. Family and friends are asked to go directly to the church. The family will receive friends 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.
