WILKES-BARRE — James Thomas Murphy Jr., 84, of Wilkes-Barre, died late Monday evening, June 11, 2018, at home, with family by his side.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on Sept. 11, 1933, he was the son of the late James T. and Ruth Peters Murphy and was a graduate of St. Leo's High School, Class of 1952, and Ashley and King's College, Class of 1959, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He served his country proudly during the Korean War and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Jim was employed as a caseworker supervisor for the Department of Welfare and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of AOH, St. John Neuman Division, and past president of St. Leo's Alumni. Jim was a lifetime member of St. Leo's Church, Ashley, where he served on its parish board, participated as a lector and was a member of its Holy Name Society, where he served as past secretary.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Claire Murphy.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jo McAndrew Murphy; sons Michael Murphy, of Wilkes-Barre, and Kevin Murphy and his partner, Gerald Pogzeba, of Wilkes-Barre; daughter Mary Ellen Murphy Jones and her husband, John; granddaughter Michaela; and granddaughter and goddaughter, Erin.

A funeral service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018, from the Lehman Family Funeral Service Inc., 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Leo's/Holy Rosary Parish, 33 Manhattan St., Ashley. The Reverend Vincent Dang will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may visit from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2018, and from 8:30 a.m. until time of service Saturday morning at the funeral home.
