Joseph Basler Obituary

March 12, 2011

Joseph A. Basler, of East Greenwich, R.I., was called home to God on Saturday, March 12, 2011. Joe was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son to Claude and Anna (Hellauer) Basler, on January 19, 1925. His brothers, Claude and Matthew; and sister, Nancy (Basler) Cronauer, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beatrice (Zalys); and his six children. "Pop Pop" was blessed with 10 grandchildren. He leaves one sister, Marion Basler, of Wilkes-Barre; and many nieces and nephews. Joe graduated from GAR High School in 1943 and also from Georgia Tech University. He proudly served in the military as a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. For 20 years, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves, retiring with the rank of Lt. Commander. Joe worked as an executive in the jewelry industry. Later he founded his own company, Milspec Industries. Joe was a devoted Catholic and member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish where he was an active volunteer for over 30 years. For many years he also contributed his time to community youth athletic organizations coaching football, baseball, and basketball teams. The legacy he leaves behind is one of faith in God, devotion to family and optimism in life. A Concelebrated Mass was held on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Donations may be made in his memory to the Our Lady of Mercy Church Outreach Program, 65 Third St., East Greenwich, RI 02818; or Special Olympics.
