WILKES-BARRE — Josephine (Jaye Strum) Strumski, 84, passed away after a courageous nine-year battle with cancer, on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by her sisters and niece.

Born Sept. 12, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Anna Giabbarresi Amico.

After Josephine graduated from high school, she attended beauty school in Wilkes-Barre and received her cosmetology license. She managed the beauty salon at Lazarus Department Store, Wilkes-Barre, for many years until the store closed. Later she ran a beauty salon out of her home until her illness prevented her from continuing her work.

In her days after she graduated high school, she sang with many local bands in the Wilkes-Barre area.

She was a member of the Little Theatre for many years, performing in a variety of shows in both supporting and starring roles.

Throughout her life, she greatly enjoyed traveling with her husband, Jerry, to whom she was married for 56 years. She visited every state and its capital in the United States. She loved taking cruises, and her favorite memory was of Rio De Janiero.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald (Jerry Strum) Strumski; and sister Eleanor Bird.

Surviving are her sisters Mary LaGrasta, Old Forge, and Rosalie Brown and her husband, Robert, Arnold, Md.; 10 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; and many cousins.

Josephine's family extends special thanks to the staff at Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, for their help, compassion and loving care over the past few months.

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in All Saints Parish, 66 Willow St., Plymouth. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Mausoleum, Hanover Township. Family and friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Community Care at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre; or the , Wilkes Barre, PA 18701, for colon cancer research.
