Sophie Theresa Swantkowski, of Oakley, Calif., passed away peacefully in her sleep, Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, after a long illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1916, in Duryea, she was a daughter of the late Stanley and Emilia Zyzniewski. She lived in Pennsylvania for 87 years and worked in the medical profession for 50 years of that time. In 2005, she moved to California to live with her son and daughter-in-law.
Sophie loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her favorite pastimes were working on crossword puzzles and watching game shows.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Pennsylvania and a volunteer at the Red Cross and the VFW home. Sophie loved attending Sunday Mass at St. Anthony's Parish in Oakley and became well-loved and admired by all the parishioners there. She will definitely be missed by all.
Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore; her son, Michael; her brothers, Joseph, Stanley, John, Frank and Henry; and her sisters, Emilia and Agnes.
Sophie is survived by her son, Stephen, and daughter-in-law, Angelyn; grandchildren, Kimberly Good (Royce), Jennifer Albaugh (George), Stephen Swantkowski (Amber), Tara Keithley (Aaron) and Carrie Burkholder (Trevor); great-grandchildren, Hayden and Kayley Albaugh, Logan Swantkowski, Alana and Asha Keithley and Aiden and Ryker Burkholder.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, with visitation and vigil, at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel, Antioch, Calif. A funeral liturgy was held Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Oakley. Family and friends are invited to committal services 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Polish National Catholic Cemetery, Pettebone and Watt streets, Duryea.
