William C. Gries

EDWARDSVILLE — William C. Gries, 87, of Edwardsville, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at St. Luke's Villa, Wilkes-Barre.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre on March 1, 1931, a son of the late Lucas and Minnie Grugel Gries. Bill attended GAR Memorial High School and he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

Prior to his retirement, Bill served as a firefighter for the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department for 32 years as the driver of No. 6 aerial fire truck and he was also employed as a bus driver for many years for the Williams Bus Line.

He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Wilkes-Barre, where he served as treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the International Association of Firefighters and a member of the Lithuanian Social Club.

Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Redick.

Surviving is his wife of 65 years, Jean Bayer Gries; son William C. Gries Jr. and his wife, Cindi, of Houston, Texas; daughter Corinne Petyo and her husband, Edmund, of Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren Alix Gries Burger, Kacie Gries, Danni and Ethan Petyo; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Mary E. Laufer will officiate. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
