FRANKLIN TWP. — Robert Appleby, 78, of Franklin Township, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014, at home with his wife of 57 years at his side.

Born in Wyoming on Dec. 7, 1935, he was a son of the late Richard and Violet (Hall) Appleby.

He was educated in the Tunkhannock schools and pursued a career as a self-employed plumbing and heating technician. He was member of the St. Francis X. Cabrini parish. As a member of both the Franklin Township and Mt. Zion Bicentennial volunteer fire companies, he put his talents to work making many improvements to benefit his beloved fire companies, where he made many lifelong friends. He always had a joke or a story to tell and was "the life of the party."

Bob was a person of many interests and talents. He loved his garden, traveling with his wife, fixing just about anything and, in later years, walking around the flea markets. However, his greatest love and joy was his family. He was a proud father and grandpop who loved to tell everyone of their accomplishments and successes. He was their protector and best friend.

He will be greatly missed.

As well as his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, John, Richard and Harold Appleby; sisters, Marjorie Bogart, Violet Mahoney, Florence Millard and Dorothy Rainville.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert, and his wife, Pamela, Richmond Va.; a daughter, Lynn Ann Thrash, and her husband, Mark, Denver, Pa.; sister, Evelyn Anderson, Glen Alden; granddaughters, Candace Appleby and Alyssa Thrash; grandsons, Robert and Nicholas Appleby; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family thanks the fire and ambulance family for their efforts; his great-nephew, Donny; other family members; and his many friends for all their help. We will all miss his spirit, concern and love.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the Metcalfe-Shaver-Kopcza Funeral Home Inc., 504 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Frances X. Cabrini Church, Carverton, with the Rev. Vincent H. Dang officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home
