Francis A. Elick

LUZERNE — Mr. Francis A. Elick, of Luzerne, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Aug. 4, 1930, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Frank and Helen Wassack Elick.

Francis was a 1948 graduate of Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and recipient of the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and United Nations Service Medal.

Frank was employed as a computer programmer at Planters Peanuts, Wilkes-Barre, from 1948 until 1962, and was instrumental in programming the company's first computer. He also worked as a programmer at Fairleigh Dickinson University and later at Blue Cross, Wilkes-Barre, until retiring.

He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Luzerne, where he was active in the choir and numerous church activities, the Senior Center, Kingston, Planters Peanuts Peanut Pals, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6518, Exeter, and the Korean War Vets. He enjoyed polkas and dancing.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria, on Nov. 29, 2011.

Surviving are his daughters, Debbie Villano and Lisa Rospigliosi, both of Luzerne; grandchildren, Cassandra Lennox, Brandon Villano, Valerie and Nina Rospigliosi; and great-grandchildren, Lilly Eroh, Joey Lennox and Nathan C. Yurkin.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Parish, Bennett Street, Luzerne. The Rev. Michael Zipay, pastor, will be celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary's Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming. Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
