PRINGLE — Gerard F. Schutz, 81, of Pringle, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2014, in the presence of his family at Wilkes Barre General Hospital after a short illness.
He was a son of the late John E. and Gertrude Schutz. He attended Wilkes-Barre schools and was a 1951 graduate of GAR High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Jerry was employed as a journeyman electrician through IBEW L.U. 163 for 42 years, serving as a member of its executive board, recording secretary and finally as president prior to his retirement in 1995.
Jerry was an avid outdoorsman, private pilot and football official for both the PIAA and NCAA. In retirement, Jerry could often be found enjoying his favorite hobbies of golf, bowling, fishing, hunting and trap shooting. He was a longtime active member of the Luzerne County Federation of Sportsmen and numerous other sportsmen's clubs and organizations.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, the former Mary Margaret Thornton; daughter Peggy Mullin and her husband, Neil, Hanover Township; son Gerard Schutz and his wife, Lisa, Shavertown; daughter Ellen Welch and her husband, Cory, Larksville; son Michael Schutz and his wife, Andrea, Pringle; daughter Mary Christine Schutz-Gidula, Kingston; son John J. Schutz, Elizabethtown; son Eric, Swoyersville; brother, John E. Schutz, Wilkes-Barre; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Kopicki Funeral Home, 263 Zerbey Ave., Kingston, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Ignatius Church. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
