WILKES-BARRE — Katherine P. Freund, 92, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, in Celtic Hospice at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
She was born on Nov. 2, 1921, in Nanticoke, a daughter of the late Frank O. and Edna Marsh Freund.
Katherine was a graduate of GAR Memorial High, class of 1940, and Bucknell Junior College (now Wilkes University), class of 1942. She received her bachelor's from Bucknell University in 1944 and her master's from Bucknell University in 1949.
Katherine was a member of the Wyoming Valley Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-Barre. She served for many years as a deaconess, elder, trustee and chairwoman of the Personnel Committee, the Christian Education Committee and she was the recipient of the Gold Cross at the Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Katherine was very proud to have served as a teacher and educator for 30 years with the Wilkes-Barre Area School District at GAR Memorial High School, retiring in 1983. She was a former officer and life member of the National Education Association, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and the Wyoming Valley Women's Club.
Katherine was also a member of numerous honorary fraternities, including the Sigma Tau Delta (English), Delta Phi Alpha (German), Kappa Delta Epsilon (education), Phi Alpha Theta (history) and the Tau Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
Surviving are her cousins, Norman and Mary Louise Marsh, Kingston; numerous friends, including, Mary Kay and Henry Zoltewicz, Eileen and Neil Valunas, Peter and Elaine Halesey, Joseph and Barbara Halesey, Paulette and Bob Kovach, Paul and Eileen Halesey, all of Hanover Township.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Wyoming Valley Presbyterian Church, Hanover and Westminster Streets, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. If attending the funeral service, please go directly to the church. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre.
