UPPER ASKAM — Bertha B. Aftewicz, 89, of the Upper Askam section of Hanover Township, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Nanticoke. Bertha was born in Wilkes-Barre on Jan. 12, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Peter and Bertha (Karnoski) Bobrowski.
Bertha was a member of Holy Family Church, Sugar Notch. She was formerly employed by Cohen Fine Sewing and R.C.A.
Bertha was an amazing, devoted wife and mother, who was loved dearly by all her children and family. She loved bingo, puzzles and spending time with her family and her best friend and watchdog, Kaylo.
Her light and strength will be sadly missed by all.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. Aftewicz; son, Edward J. Aftewicz Jr.; sister, Mary Ann Paltanavich; brothers, Peter, Joseph and David Bobrowski.
Surviving are daughters, Patricia Wnuk, Linda Aftewicz, Sandra Barry and her husband, Bill; sons, Henry Aftewicz and his wife, Jean, John Aftewicz and his wife, Jean, Michael Aftewicz and David Aftewicz; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Kiesling and Florence Chiumento;numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend Bertha's Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Holy Family Church, Main Street, Sugar Notch. Interment will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. A private family viewing will be held. There are no public calling hours.
Arrangements are by the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley.
