DALLAS — Joan Urban John, 80, of Newberry Estate, Dallas, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Swoyersville, Joan was a daughter of the late Francis and Connie Kamus Urban. She was a graduate of Swoyersville High School, class of 1951.

Joan lived in the Back Mountain area most of her life. An avid reader, she enjoyed crossword puzzles and would work them tirelessly. She was an advocate of the arts and loved to dance, travel, garden and entertain. An amazing cook and a baker extraordinaire, Joan possessed a genuine gift for making everyone feel comfortable. She was generous with her time and talent and put her heart and soul into everything she did. Joan was passionate about her involvement in Showcase Theatre, whether she was the lead role or dressing a set. With a quick wit and infectious laugh, she was a gracious woman who truly loved and cherished her family and friends.

Joan was a strong woman and an incredible mother, mom-mom and sister.

She was a member of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas.

Surviving are her daughters, Connie A. John, Dallas, Amy Kehner and her husband, Kevin, Camp Hill; grandchildren, Adam and Grace Kehner, Camp Hill; sister, Eunice Patyk, Swoyersville; brother, Francis Urban and his wife, Joan, West Pittston; former husband, Gerald T. John, Dallas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Gate of Heaven Church, 40 Machell Ave., Dallas. The Rev. Daniel A. Toomey will officiate. Interment will be made in Denison Cemetery, Swoyersville. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to , 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
