SLOCUM TWP. — Sarah J. Smereski, 89, of Slocum Road, Wapwallopen, Slocum Township, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital following a brief illness.
Born on Aug. 6, 1924, in Slocum, she was a daughter of the late John D. and Thesia Payne Lucas. Sarah attended the Slocum Township schools and graduated from the former Newport Township High School, class of 1942. After her marriage to Edward Smereski they resided in Louisiana, Texas and Michigan, while he was stationed stateside in the military, and most of her life in Slocum.
Mrs. Smereski was employed as a seamstress in the local garment industry for many years, including Cohen & Fine in Wilkes-Barre and last at Luzerne Outerwear, Salem Township, prior to retiring. She was a member of the AFL-CIO.
Her husband, Edward, died on March 25, 2002. The last member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by sisters, Alice Chester, Shirley Spaide and Marcella McMillan.
Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Rinehimer and her husband, Edward, Dorrance; granddaughters, Lora Rinehimer and her partner, Leisha Boeckel, York County, and Patricia Moratori and her husband, Byron, Slocum; great-grandchildren, Mallory and Joseph Moratori; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. J.P. Bohanan, pastor of Christ United Methodist Church, Mountain Top, officiating. Interment will follow in Emmanuel United Church of Christ Cemetery, Dorrance. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
