WEST HAZLETON — Thomas J. Mistal, 41, of West Hazleton, passed away suddenly at his residence from complications of diabetes.

He was a beloved son of Thomas R. and Karen Mistal of Olyphant and Deborah and Gerald Potochnik of Reading. He was the brother of Kristy and Marty Matulevich, Lansdale; and stepbrother of Jim Ference, West Hazleton, Farah and Bryon Breese, Catonsville, Maryland, and Suzanne Ference, New York City. He was an uncle of Lauren, Adam, Ava, David and Eli.

Born in Hazleton, Tom graduated from West Hazleton High School in 1991, participating in basketball and cross-country, before going on to attend Penn State University. He was a member of the Pulaski Club in West Hazleton.

Tom worked hard throughout his life in various career positions, mostly centered in the food service industry. He was employed by the Wilkes-Barre Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the dietary department.

Tom enjoyed sharing his knowledge and opinion of current world events with others. He was an avid reader and a great conversationalist. He will be remembered for his keen sense of humor, his kindness and compassion toward others and his free-thinking ways of making people laugh.

He loved to golf and enjoyed visiting Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Watching sports, going to the beach, swimming at the lake, dining out, spending time at the casino and visiting with his family and friends were his favorite activities.

Five years ago, Tom survived a very serious illness which rendered him an insulin-dependent diabetic. He was devoted to the Blessed Mother and had a gentle, caring and generous spirit. Tom lived his life on his terms which were occasionally unconventional.

He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

His funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Monday from Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home Inc., 542-544 N. Wyoming St., Hazleton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 213 W. Green St., West Hazleton. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Drums.
