WILKES-BARRE — Dorothy A. MacKenzie, 84, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Aug. 22, 2014, at the Little Flower Manor, following a brief illness.
Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Wilkes-Barre and was born July 29, 1930, the only child of the late Joseph and Lottie Halas Novak. She was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School, class of 1948. She was employed by the state of Pennsylvania in the Wilkes-Barre Unemployment Office for 30 plus years, retiring in 1990.
She was an active member of the former St. Mary Church of the Maternity and Holy Rosary Church, and most recently was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre.
Dorothy was a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She was very kind and thoughtful to her many friends and relatives over the years. She found great joy in sending them greeting cards.
The family wishes to especially thank Dr. Patrick Kerrigan for the care and compassion shown to her and them during her time in the hospital and at Little Flower Manor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John MacKenzie, who passed away 48 years ago.
Surviving is her son, John MacKenzie and his wife, Patty; grandsons, John Joseph and Stephen Michael MacKenzie, Hackettstown, New Jersey.
Funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Parish, 40 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. John S. Terry as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
