KINGSTON — Irwin R. Weinberg, 88, of Kingston, passed away Monday, May 2, 2016, at his home.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Samuel and Sara (Elkins) Weinberg. On June 6, 1952, he married the love of his life, Jean Tyrrell.
A graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Mr. Weinberg, at age 17, started a brief career as an elevator operator in New York City. He then went on to become an internationally renowned philatelist, a career that took him from Nassau Street to Buckingham Palace, owning the British Guiana, and many other well-known philatelic rarities. He served on the board of several philatelic organizations including the Smithsonian's Philatelic Museum. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the Dickinson School of Law. Mr. Weinberg's career achievements were featured on the History Channel and he was recently honored by Meyers High School and Wilkes University with a documentary on his life.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his wife, Jean Alice Weinberg.
Surviving are his daughter, Jan Paella Weinberg, of Kingston; sons, Robert John Weinberg, of Kingston, and John Henry Weinberg, of Dallas.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Temple B'nai B'rith, 408 Wyoming Ave., Kingston. Rabbi Roger Lerner will officiate. Interment will follow in B'nai B'rith Cemetery, Hanover Township. The Weinberg family will receive friends from noon until time of service Friday. Shiva will be observed from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Weinberg family home in Kingston.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Harold C. Snowdon Home for Funerals Inc., 420 Wyoming Ave., Kingston.
