Patricia DeSales Boyle Kelly (aka Banj), of Harveys Lake, passed away Monday, December 20, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Forty Fort in 1922, she was a daughter of the late T. Joseph and Elizabeth O'Malley Boyle. Pat was a 1940 graduate of Forty Fort High School and a 1943 graduate of Wyoming Valley Homeopathic Hospital School of Nursing, earning a Registered Nurse designation. Pat enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where she served in the Nurse Corps as a Lt(JG). Upon honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, she performed private duty nursing until 1962. From 1962 until her retirement in 1982, she was the college health nurse for the Wilkes-Barre Campus of Penn State University. She was the founder and first president of the NEPA College Health Nurses Association, of which she was an active member even in retirement. Pat was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church, Harveys Lake, and its Altar and Rosary Society, the Harveys Lake Protective Association, and American Legion Posts 967 and 672. Preceding her in death were her husband, William R. Kelly (Bill); son John; sisters Mary Rose Sloan, Elizabeth Gallagher, and Alice Shutts; and brother T. Joseph Boyle. Surviving are her sons, Lt. Col. (USAF ret.) William R. Kelly and his wife, Mary Lee, Williamsport; Joseph J. Kelly and his wife, Natalie, Springfield, Va.; and Frank A. Kelly and Helen Martinez, Shickshinny; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Edward J. Boyle, Harrisburg, Pa.; and her longtime friend, Leonard Groboski. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Victory Church, Pole 26, Harveys Lake. Family and friends are invited to call at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Victory Church, Pole 26, Harveys Lake, PA 18618, or Penn State University, Wilkes-Barre Campus, Old Route 115, Lehman, PA 18627.
