Gerard (Jerry) H. Murtha, 77, of Shickshinny, formerly of Hanover Township, died Thursday, December 6, 2012, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township.

He was born in Pittston, son of the late James and Lucy Stupack Lumsdon.

Jerry was a graduate of Kingston High School, where he played center on the football team. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of machinist mate third class.

He owned and operated Tioga Tool and Die on Tioga Avenue in Kingston until the 1972 flood.

He also worked for Acme Tool and Die in Wilkes-Barre, Consolidated Cigar in Berwick, Foster Wheeler and Eberhard-Faber in Mountain Top as a tool-and-die supervisor.

He retired as a tool-and-die supervisor at Muskin Leisure Products Inc. in 1997, where he met his wife, Patricia.

As a hobby, he ran Jerry's Gun Shop, first in Hanover Township, and currently in Shickshinny.

Jerry is survived by his wife, the former Patricia Legins; daughters, Kathleen Bulkley, Mary Lou Murtha, Jodi Maira; and granddaughter, Christine Maira.

Funeral services will be today at 7 p.m. from the Kopicki Funeral Home, 263 Zerbey Ave., Kingston, with military honors. As per Jerry's wishes, interment will be at sea.

Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
