John M. Wolfkiel

John M. Wolfkiel, 85, of Phillips Street, Nanticoke, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at his residence.

Born in Hazleton on July 24, 1927, he was a son of the late Ernest and Mary Brobst Wolfkiel.

Prior to his retirement, John was employed as a firefighter for the city of Nanticoke. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. John was a member of St. John's Orthodox Church and American Legion Post 350, both of Nanticoke.

He will be remembered as someone with an uncanny ability to fix nearly anything and did so for family and friends throughout his life.

John was preceded in death by his wife, the former Dorothy Sokol Wolfkiel; brothers Richard and James; and sister, Doris.

Surviving are his son, Michael, and his wife, Sandy, West Nanticoke; grandchildren, Devon Wolfkiel, Brooklyn, and Ian Wolfkiel, West Nanticoke; sister, Joyce Figmick, Nanticoke; brother Robert Wolfkiel, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home Inc., 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, with services at 10 a.m. in St. John's Orthodox Church, Hanover section of Nanticoke. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
