Martin James Cunningham, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Feb. 28, 2013 in his residence in League City, Texas, at the age of 98.

He was born on Oct. 19, 1914 in Wilkes-Barre to Martin and Priscilla Cunningham. Martin served in the U.S. Navy as a first class officer and served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked 30 years on the Penn Central Railroad until it went out of business. Martin also worked for Indian Head Sanitation until he retired. Martin was part of the Hanover Township division of the Notre Dame Club and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; brother James; sisters, Elizabeth and Margret and children, Patricia, Martin and Joseph.

He is survived by his grandchildren, Colleen Wechsler and husband Mike; Joseph Cunningham and fiancée Becky, with whom he lived and was cared for during the last two years; Megan Manganaro and husband Tony; Mark Meginess and wife Eva; Ruthanne Koonrad and husband Randy; Michael Cunningham and wife Sue; great-grandchildren, Derek and Katie Toole; Sara and Kayla Koonrad; Andi and Kelli Meginess; Ashley and Alec Wechsler and Logan Cunningham, Miley Cunningham and soon to be Baby Boy Cunningham!! Martin spent the last two years of his life living with his family in League City, Texas. He spent many days catching up on his Westerns, watching Notre Dame football and sharing lots of candy with his great-grandson Logan.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1612 East Walker, League City, Texas, with Father Howard Drabek officiating under the direction of Crowder Funeral Home, (281) 332-2727. Interment will take place on Thursday, March 7, at 2:30 p.m. at Maple Hill Cemetery in Wilkes-Barre, under the direction of Desiderio Funeral Home, (570) 822-9129.
