CARBONDALE — Janice T. Calafut, 59, of Carbondale, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at Commonwealth Hospice of NEPA, Scranton, after a long battle with breast cancer. Janice fought her cancer with grace, humanity, courage and dignity.

Born in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Frank L. and Florence Smith Calafut. She was a 1971 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, and a 1973 graduate of Lackawanna Junior College, Scranton, with a degree in business. She was a secretary at District Court in Carbondale for Sean P. McGraw and former magistrate Mary McAndrew. Janice had also been employed by H & R Block, Carbondale, for David Koruszko and Hornbeck Chevrolet. She was a member of St. Michael's Church/St. Rose Parish, where she had been a member of the parish council and was active in the yearly parish picnics. Janice enjoyed traveling and dining out with her friends, "The Farkle Family," Annette, Carol, Mike, Linda, Tim, Karen, Chris, Patty, Kathy and David.

One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with her nieces and nephews. She loved them more than words could say. "A.J.," as she was called by the nieces and nephews, was an "awesome" aunt. Janice hopes there is a TV in heaven so she can keep up with her shows.

The family would like to thank the staff of Commonwealth Hospice for their compassionate and professional care they showed to Janice.

She is survived by a brother, Frank M. Calafut, and wife Margaret, Carbondale; a sister, Ann Marie, and husband Jack Ruane, Laceyville; nieces and nephews, Tina and Jim Yarnal, Kelly and Jimmy Kulsicavage; Shannon, Adam, Brandon and wife Chrysa, and Ethan Calafut; a great-niece and nephew, Hunter and Elaina Kulsicavage; a lifelong companion, Bob Burshnick; aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will be Wednesday at the Joseph W Scotchlas Funeral Home Inc., 621 Main St., Simpson, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 46 Midland St., Simpson. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
