Walking through the streets of Basel this week watching the local Fasnacht Carnival reminded me of Lionel - the type of spectacle he would have enjoyed. My childhood memories are of a wonderful laugh, colour and unexpected playful games at Christmas shared with the whole family.

Accept my heartfelt condolences.
I loved Lionel!
He acquired my art for the V&A and took me to tea when he retired. We continued a regular mail correspondence, sharing ideas about life and art.

So sorry to learn of Lionel's death. One has such pleasant memories of a kind and courteous scholar. I regret that I am unable to be with you at Mortlake on 23rd February but I shall be remembering Lionel on that day.
