David Lawrence Shelley
age 81, of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Aultman Hospital in Canton, following a long illness. Born in Niles, Mich., on Aug. 7, 1932, David was the son of the late Howard T. and Margaret (Berry) Shelley. Upon graduating from Uhrichsville High School in 1950, David rode his Harley Davidson via Rt. 66 to California and back. He then furthered his education at The Ohio State University in 1955, with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. He was in the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. David then served in the United States Marines from March 24, 1956 until March 1, 1958, as an Air Defense Control Officer, 3rd Marine Airwing, stationed in Southern California. David was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Uhrichsville and a life member of the Elks #424. He was formerly employed at General Motors (Saginaw Steering Gear) before returning to Uhrichsville. He then went to the Clay City Pipe Company, where he remained a director, before going to Ross Clay Pipe Company, Dennison Pottery and then retired from Marsh Lumber Company in 1994 at the age of 62. David was on the original Board of Directors at Kent State University Tuscarawas Campus, where he was active in developing the new campus. He served on the Twin City Water and Sewer Board and was a principle of the development company for Deer Hill in Dennison.
David is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Hillyer) Shelley, whom he married on June 20, 1953, she survives of the home; his children, Kurt (Dede McCartney) Shelley of New Philadelphia and Kim (Burt Sturrup) Shelley of Belmont, Maine; he was adored by his grandchildren, Casey Sturrup of Waltham, Mass., Carly Shelley of OSU in Columbus and Maddy Shelley of Otterbein in Westerville; his nieces and nephews Lisa Shelley, Lori Shelley Dunn, Dana Ferrell, Beth Hillyer, Becky Hillyer, Blair Hillyer and Brad Hillyer, seven grandnieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by his brother, Charles (Doris) Shelley and niece, Leslie Shelley Mulroy.
Funeral services for David will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. at Uhrichsville, with the Rev. Mark Unrue officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m., on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the funeral home.
