John F. "Jack"
known most of his life as "Jack", went to live with the Lord Tuesday, July 23, 2013. Jack was born in Lowell, Massachusetts to the late Bernard T. and Mary A. O'Grady. He was a graduate of Lowell High School and a cum laude graduate of Massasoit College in Brockton. He also received his bachelor's degree from the University of Mass/Boston. He proudly served for 11 years in the U.S. Army, seeing combat with the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea and service in Japan and Germany. He reenlisted in the Army reserve serving with the 187th infantry brigade retiring as a sergeant first class after 24 years of service. Following his discharge from the Army, he worked 32 years for the Boston Gas Company retiring from there in 1988 as an administrative assistant. He moved to Palatka, Fla. the same year. He was a Christian and an active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, Johnson, Fla. He was a life member of VFW Post #3349 where he served for many years as quartermaster and held the "Allstate Quartermaster" title for 1997/98. Jack was also a member-at-large of the American Legion, a founder of Outpost 11, Society of the Third Infantry Division, a member of the Association of the Army and a retired member of the United Steel Workers of America. Jack was also an avid "Gator" fan and enjoyed building things.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Rawlings; and daughter, Tonda Sparks. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Ridaught O'Grady, who made the last years of his life the best and happiest; his sons, John F. O'Grady, Jr. of Duxbury, Mass., Donald P. O'Grady of Dover, Ohio and Richard L. Barton of Florahome,Fla.; his daughters, Joan E. Smith of Oveido, Julie G. Dean of Somerdale, Ohio and Susie J. McKinney of Florahome, Fla.; as well as 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, to whom he was known as "Poppa". He was a loving Dad and Granddad and will be sorely missed.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Johnson with Dr. L.D. Osteen officiating. No visitation is scheduled.
