John Franklin Gowins
Age 94, of 320 Sycamore Court, Frankfort, Ky., died at 9:25 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012 in Longmeadow Care Center, Ravenna, Ohio. Born Sept. 26, 1918, in Uhrichsville, Ohio, he was a son of the late Frank William Gowins and Ruth Bridgeman Gowins. He was a 1936 graduate of Uhrichsville High School and a 1942 graduate of Indiana Technical College. John was an avid sports enthusiast and was named Player of the Year for his college conference basketball team. John was a Veteran of the United States Army serving his country from May of 1945 to September 1946. In 1983 John retired from Goodyear Aerospace in Akron where he had been employed for 30 years as a mechanical engineer. He was a devoted Christian and belonged to the Methodist Church. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
His wife of 65 years, Marjorie Lou Gordon Gowins, survives. They were married May 3, 1947; also surviving are a daughter, Pamela K. (John) DeHaven of Lake Milton, Ohio; a son, John E. (Lora) Gowins of Versailles, Kentucky; a brother, James Gowins of Canton; a sister, Ruth Ann Fouts of Uhrichsville; and six grandchildren: Brett, Eric, Ryan, Rachel, Caitlin and Kendall. John was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Philabaum; and three brothers: Charles Gowins, William Gowins, and Frank "Sonny" Gowins.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, in the United Methodist Church in Gnadenhutten, Ohio, with Pastor Gregg Kelly officiating. Entombment will take place at a Sunset Memorial Gardens in Frankfort, Kentucky at a later date. Friends and relatives will be received for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
