John Ross Laughlin
age 94, of Jewett died Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Sunnyslope Nursing Home, Bowerston. Born Jan. 11, 1920 in Archer Twp, Harrison Co. he was a son of the late Albert J. Laughlin and Clara M. (Baker) Laughlin. His family moved to a farm near Scio in 1923. John attended New Rumley School for 8 years and graduated from Scio High School in 1937. Then he attended The Ohio State University and was a member of the R.O.T.C. military training. Besides being a farmer all his life, John worked at the Scio Pottery Co. as a chemist, Cadiz Mining as a weigh scales person and truck foreman and the Bureau of Mines where he was a foreman and instructor of First Aid licenses. He was also a heavy equipment operator for numerous coal mines and highway construction companies. After working for 50 years John retired and he and his wife, Jean enjoyed traveling with tour groups across the U.S. and many foreign countries. John was a member of the Arbutus #288, where he was a past patron, Scio F and AM Lodge #587, 32nd degree member of the Steubenville Scottish Rite Lodge, Harrison County Farm Bureau, Scio Civic Club and Jewett United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Mary Jean (Porter) Ager Laughlin; two brothers, Albert Ward Laughlin of Scio and Judge Neil M. Laughlin of Newark; and a sister, Mary Janet McGinnis of Mt. Vernon.
Surviving are two stepdaughters, Connie Jean Ager of Plano, Texas and Karen Sue Hardwick of Youngstown; a step-grandson, Adam Hardwick of Columbus; nieces, Linda L. Laughlin of Scio and Julie Laughlin of Heath; and many great-nieces, cousins and friends.
John's final wishes were to have private services conducted by Rev. David Lee. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Jewett. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Koch Funeral Home in Scio has been entrusted with his arrangements.
