passed away in Loris, S.C. on May 8, 2013. She was born Sept. 23, 1920 in Dover, Ohio, the oldest daughter of the late Clarence L. and Clara E. Schick. Jo graduated from Dover High School in 1938 and received a BA degree from Flora Stone Mather College, Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in 1942. She took additional training at Ohio State University, University of Akron in Ohio, and Millersville State College in Millersville, Pa. During World War II Jo worked as a cryptanalyst for the Army Signal Corps (later became National Security Agency) in Washington, DC. Upon returning to Dover, Jo taught French and Spanish for 21 years in Midvale, Strasburg, and Dover Middle and High Schools. She relocated to the Myrtle Beach, S.C. area in 2011 to be near her daughter. She was an active member of Alpha Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; a member of the Tuscarawas Valley Branch of the American Association of University Women; a member of the Dover-New Philadelphia Business and Professional Women; and a member of the Tuscarawas County Retired Teacher's Association.
Jo is survived by her daughter, Diane and son-in-law, Ricky Shell of Little River, S.C.; a sister, Mary Margaret (Gilbert) Rawlngs of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; a granddaughter, Sarah (Phillip) Newton of Charlotte, N.C. and special cousins, Howard Schick, Diana Collins, Dorothea and Jim Cotton; and many good friends.
