Ralph Lee Hootman
89, Newcomerstown, entered into eternal rest early Sunday morning, Nov. 3, at his Newcomerstown residence following an extended illness. Ralph was born in Newcomerstown on March 14, 1924, a son of the late Walter L. and Alice G. Decker Hootman Besst. He was a graduate of Newcomerstown High School, class of 1942. Ralph then enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served as a sergeant with the 69th Heavy Weapons and Infantry Division in the Rhineland and central Europe during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned to civilian life. Ralph was employed as a machine operator with Armco Steel, Coshocton Stainless Division (Cyclops), for over 28 years before his retirement in 1988. He was a life member of the B.P.O.E. #1555, Elks Lodge, Newcomerstown. Ralph was a loving husband to both of his wives. He enjoyed singing, dancing, taking automobile rides in the country, and coin collecting.
Ralph was preceded in death by his first wife, Erma M. "Peg" Glazer Hootman, Newcomerstown, who died on July 3, 1993, and whom he married Sept. 5, 1946. Also deceased are a brother, Homer Louis "Cy" Hootman, Newcomerstown, and a stepson, Randy Lane Gross, Stone Creek. He is survived by his second wife, Dorothy Lucille Stocker Gross Hootman, Newcomerstown, with whom he shared 13 wonderful years of marriage. Ralph and Dorothy were married on June 1, 2000. Also surviving are his brother, William W. Hootman, Newcomerstown, and three nieces from the Glazer family- Lana Glazer Loader, Brenda Glazer Lamitina, and Roxie Glazer Gerber. Ralph also leaves several stepchildren from the Gross family, William Lee and wife Becky Ann Christner Gross, New Philadelphia, Bob Alan Gross and his companion, Cathy Felgenhauer, Stone Creek, and Gloria Jean and husband Michael Joseph Cua, New Philadelphia. Also surviving are numerous step grandchildren and their families, Heather and Justin Agar and children Sloan and Oscar, New Philadelphia, Dennis and Tracy Gross and children Khole and Cooper, Melbourne, Fla., Dawn Gross and children Tori and Libby, Robbie and Theresa Gross and children Nicole, Cody, and Kaley, Kevin Cua and children Megan and Camden, Keith and Abby Knight Cua and children Nick and Ansley, and Eric and Jen Harvey Cua and children Jace and Sage.
To honor Ralph's wishes, no visiting hours will be observed. Public grave side services and burial will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1 p.m., at the Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington. Military grave side services will also be conducted by the Newcomerstown Veterans' Honor Guard. The family is requesting that memorials be made in Ralph's name to Health Services of Coshocton County (Coshocton County Hospice), PO Box 1284, Coshocton 43812.
