David S. Smith
age 70, of Uhrichsville, passed away on Saturday morning, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness. Born on June 23, 1942, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Thelma (McKee) Smith.
He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of 47 years, Karen Sue (Burns) Smith who survives of the home; and four children, Dustin (Melissa) Smith of Canal Fulton, Heidy (Rich) Struchen of Uhrichsville, Holly (Paul) Baburek of New Philadelphia and Kim (Jason) Johnson of New Philadelphia. Dave was a proud grandfather to his nine grandchildren, Macey and Malory Roth, Kylar and Paige Struchen, Mitchell and Sofie Johnson and Connor, Cameron and Ashley Smith. He is also survived by three sisters, Marla (Ray) Kasunic of Winter Haven, Fla., Cheryl (Dick) Swinderman of New Philadelphia, Elaine (Homer) Carmany of New Philadelphia; and a brother, Mark (Sue) Smith of Tuscarawas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jack Smith.
Dave was a lifelong resident of Uhrichsville and graduated in 1960 from Uhrichsville High School. He attended Ohio State University and Kent State University and proudly served in the U. S. Army Reserves. Dave was a Real Estate broker and owner of Dave Smith Realty. He also helped to establish and manage numerous housing complexes in Tuscarawas County, including Jaycee Village, Jaycee Villa, Jaycee Valley and Jaycee View in Uhrichsville, Jaycee Horizons in New Philadelphia, Warwick Manor and Lions Manor in Tuscarawas, and Tents of Grace in Gnadenhutten.
Dave was extremely generous with his time and very active in the community. His affiliations included Twin City and Tuscarawas County Chambers of Commerce, Claymont Jaycees, Clayland Lions, Warwick Lions, Masons, Buckeye Club, Uhrichsville Alumni Association, Tuscarawas County Metropolitan Housing Authority (first Director), Uhrichsville Planning Commission, Claymont Jaycee Housing, Inc., Miss Clayland Scholarship Program, Habitat for Humanity, County Senior Center, and Ohio Area Agency on Aging Region 9 and numerous volunteer projects. Dave was a member of the Sharon Moravian Church in Tuscarawas and also attended New Pointe Community Church in Sugarcreek. He enjoyed all sports, music and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The greatest joy in his life was spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Funeral services for Dave will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. at Uhrichsville, with the Rev. Michael Foran officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
