Joe liked to work around his home, especially doing carpentry and otherwise working with wood. He created and restored several pieces of furniture, which are now cherished heirlooms. Joe also enjoyed traveling the United States, and in later years, liked taking pictures of family and friends. Additionally, he was a member of the Dover Elks Club and bowled on the Elks' team for many years.
