Karen Sugalski Obituary

Karen Marie Mann Sugalski, 63, of New Philadelphia, O., passed away unexpectedly on April 24, 2010, while visiting her "Auntie Mom," Shirley Jennings in Christiansburg, Va.
The daughter of the late Robert and Rose Phillips Mann, she was born in Columbus, O., on Oct. 10, 1946.
On Nov. 19, 1966, she married Norman J. Sugalski, who preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2009. Together they raised six sons.
Karen was a homemaker and was well-known throughout the area for her cooking and baking skills. A talented cake decorator, she loved to make personalized cakes for every birthday in her family, and her great-grandchildren knew her as "Grandma Happy Cake" for this reason. She prided herself on having been the one to make the wedding cake when any of her sons got married and was looking forward to doing the same for her grandchildren.
Being an only child, Karen was proud of her large family and devoted herself to being each of her children and grandchildren's biggest fan. She was also a very generous woman who spent many hours baking hundreds of cookies at a time for the NPHS band while her son Bryan was a member and never turned down an opportunity to volunteer her time and talents for her church, or make a meal for anyone in need.
Karen will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her sons and their families and the many friends she made along the way.
Survivors include her six sons, Michael (Michelle) Sugalski of New Philadelphia, Timothy (Diane) Sugalski of Strasburg, Scott Sugalski of Dover, Nicholas (Tina) Sugalski of Dover, Casey Sugalski of New Philadelphia and Bryan Sugalski of New Philadelphia; 13 grandchildren, Jacquelyn and Michael Sugalski and Amber Murphy, all of New Philadelphia, Marissa, Paige and Rebekah Sugalski and Dustin Thomas, all of Strasburg, Samantha and Zane Sugalski of New Philadelphia, Katelynn, Joshua and Karolynn Sugalski of Dover and Alexanderia Sugalski of Gnadenhutten; two great-grandchildren, Caleb and Aubrie Garmany of New Philadelphia; and an expected third great-grandchild due in August; two aunts, Shirley Jennings of Christiansburg, Va., and Bertha Higgins of Dover; numerous cousins, and her faithful Pek-A-Tese companion, "Woo."
In addition to her parents and husband, Karen was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Mackinzie Nicole Sugalski.
A Memorial Mass will be conducted on Monday, May 3, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dover, where she was a longtime member, with Fr. William Arnold officiating. Cremation has taken place through Horne Funeral Services in Christiansburg, Va., and the ashes will be buried with her husband's at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Dover, O. There will be a dinner at the St. Joseph's Family Life Center following the burial.
The family suggests that memorial gifts can be made to the Karen Sugalski Memorial Fund, c/o Commercial Savings Bank, 635 W. High Ave., New Philadelphia, O. 44663, to help defray final expenses.

Bryan and your family,
My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family, Bryan for your sudden loss of your Mother. Karen was a terrific lady, and when we ran into each other she loved talking about how proud she was of you. I still talk about the school bus cake she made for my 50th birthday, it was awesome. She will be sadly missed by all.

I am so very sorry to read of Karen's passing. I met Karen years ago when I worked at Dover Buehler's. She was a soft-spoken woman who always seemed to be kind, caring and compassionate. And she truly loved her boys, no matter what their latest "episode" had been. I will always remember her smile and the way the day always seemed a little brighter after having talked with her.
May God bless her family during this difficult time, and may your memories of the wonderful woman she was help keep you strong in the days ahead.
