Richard D. Sonnhalter, Sr.

85, of Bolivar, died Tuesday June 12, 2018, at Country Club Nursing Home in Dover. Born Dec. 29, 1932 in Massillon, he was a son of the late Weldon A. and Margaret (Shaidnagle) Sonnhalter. He was a 1950 graduate of Washington High School at Massillon, attended Kent State University at Kent, and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Richard was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War. He served stateside and around the world in the Strategic Air Command. He retired in 1994 from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company after 17 years and was a licensed funeral director and embalmer from 1960 to 2003. As a funeral director he was employed at the former Gordon-Shaidnagle and Hollinger Funeral Home at Massillon, the Tobias Funeral Home at Dayton from 1960-1966, the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home at New Philadelphia from 1966-1977 and finally at the Lebold Funeral Home at Bolivar for several years following his retirement from Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He was a life member of the New Philadelphia Elks Lodge #510, New Philadelphia V.F.W. #1445 and the AMVET Club at Massillon. He formerly served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Tri-County Funeral Directors Association.

His wife, the former Joan C. Flagg whom he married in 1956, preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 2007. He is survived by three sons Richard D. (Richard Jagunic) Sonnhalter, Jr. of New Philadelphia, Robert T. (Barbara) Sonnhalter of Manchester and James H. (Kathleen) Sonnhalter of Euclid; four grandchildren, Michael A. Sonnhalter of Manchester, Joshua D. Sonnhalter of Medina, Nathanael I. Sonnhalter of Euclid and Jacob M. Sonnhalter of Norfolk; a great-granddaughter, Lucille Furiosa; several nieces and nephews and his good friend of many years, Norma Miller of New Philadelphia. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joann G. Jordan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday June 16, 2018 at 10 a.m. at The Church of The Holy Trinity, 1835 Dover-Zoar Rd. Bolivar with Fr. Rigobert Kiwa as Celebrant assisted by Deacon Lyn Houze. Following cremation, burial will be held at Fort Laurens Cemetery in Bolivar. Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lebold-Smith Funeral Home, 248 Park Ave. in Bolivar where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:45 p.m. To share a memory please visit the funeral home's web site.
