Shirley Irene Downs
92, of Uhrichsville, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 at Union Hospital in Dover after a brief illness. Born July 11, 1921 in Uhrichsville, she was a daughter of the late Earl Raymond and Nettie Belle (Baker) Gatchell.
On April 13, 1938, she married George M. Downs, beginning her life as a devoted wife and continuing through 35 years of loving marriage until his passing on Nov. 30, 1973. They are survived by a daughter, Carol J. Roth of Uhrichsville and her sons, Devin (Brenda) Wright of Uhrichsville and Derek (Michelle) Wright of Dennison; a son, Larry (Nancy) Downs of Uhrichsville and his son, Brenton Downs of Tippecanoe; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Corey, Alex, Deren and Nathen Wright; and great-great-grandchildren, Brayson, Allen and Azellya. Irene is also survived by her brother, Elmer Gatchell of Lorain; a sister-in-law, Betty Gatchell-Shaw of Uhrichsville; a dear cousin, Evelyn Dooley of Uhrichsville, to whom she was especially close; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Marie Gatchell; a brother, Dean Gatchell; and a sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Gatchell. A lifelong resident of Uhrichsville, Irene attended Uhrichsville High School in her youth. She spent over 20 years as an employee of FabOhio in Uhrichsville until her retirement in the mid 80's and was a longtime member of the Park Grange and the Park Valley Ladies Club. She was also a member of Park Christian Church in Dennison where she had sung in the choir. Above all else, Irene treasured the time that she spent with her family. She was her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's avid supporter, attending their school and sporting events faithfully and taking great pride in their accomplishments.
Services for Irene, officiated by Pastor Scot Caley, will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, in Park Christian Church in Dennison. Interment will follow beside her beloved husband in Deersville's Patterson Union Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, prior to her funeral. Those wishing to honor her memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to Park Christian Church and Crossroads Hospice.
