Together Again

T. Madeline Horstman
age 89, of 36230 Scio-Bowerston Road, Bowerston, Ohio, went home with the Lord Saturday night, Feb. 22, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 4, 1924 in Cass, W.Va. and was the daughter of the late Jacob C. and Lorina (Friel) Shinaberry. She was a 1942 graduate of the former Uhrichsville High School. She retired from the former Scio Pottery Co. where she was employed for 37 years as a handle finisher. She attended the Belmont Technical College where she received her C.N.A Certification, and went on to work as an STNA at the Sunnyslope Nursing Home at Bowerston.
On Nov. 11, 1967, Madeline married Harry C. Horstman, Sr., who passed away on March 3, 1982. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her only brother, Robert Shinaberry; three sisters, Faye Joan Clouse, Janet Hindman, and Ora Jean Peterson; and one step-daughter, Kaye Jean Alderman. Madeline used to enjoy bowling, and bowled in several area leagues. She was an accomplished cook who specialized in baking and canning. Her pies and her strawberry jam were described by her family as extraordinary. She was known to serve up meals large enough "to feed an army". She was a pet lover who cherished the company of her Dachshund, "Hans". She is survived by two sons and a daughter, Gary E. (Sue) Rice of Munroe Falls, Ohio., Richard L. (Debra) Rice, Sr. of Bowerston, and Mrs. Terry (Carrol) Gribble of Dover, Ohio.; two stepsons, Harry C. (Dee) Horstman, Jr. of Scio, Ohio, and Larry Horstman of Bolivar, Ohio.; a stepdaughter, Sue Butterfield of Bexley, Ohio; six sisters, Margarette Jackson of Burlington, Iowa, Carol (A. J.) Johnson of Dennison, Ohio, Mrs. Walter (Edith) Leggett, Mrs. Sam (Ardith) Taylor, and Mrs. Ray (Joyce) Prall, all of of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Mrs. Ronald (Phyllis) Bower of Dennison; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Richard Hindman of Gnadenhutten, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014 in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Rev. Milo Baker and Rev. Kenneth Ogg officiating. Interment next to her beloved husband, Harry will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 until 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
