George L. McCullough
85, of Bowerston, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 after a brief illness. Born April 11, 1928 in Mercer, Pa., he was a son of the late Raymond and A. Fay (Dilley) McCullough. George spent nearly 30 years in the Mercer area and was a graduate of Fredonia-Delaware High School in the class of 1945. He moved to his home near Bowerston over 55 years ago and was employed by Grodhaus and Young in North Industry for many years until his retirement in 1993. In retirement, George enjoyed running a golf cart sales and repair business from his home, enjoying the company of his customers as well as the time that he spent tinkering in the garage. A devoted civic leader, George has been active in his community in many ways, especially within the Conotton Valley School System where he was a longtime member of the Conotton Valley Booster Club, served many years on the School Board including a past presidency, and was a member of the Buckeye Career Center Board of Education. He was also a member of the Green Valley Ruritan. George was a longtime member of Conotton United Methodist Church until its closing at the end of 2013, and he enjoyed bowling on the Church League, earning him a place in their Hall of Fame. He was an avid sportsman who loved watching the Buckeyes, NASCAR and especially his favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a stranger to none and a friend to many who will be remembered for his many kindnesses to people and animals.
He was a wonderful and loving husband to, Mary Ellen (Coryea) McCullough whom he married on August 16, 1947. She survives him at their home. He is also survived by two daughters, Sharyn Vallery of Warren, Ohio and Susan (Rich) Kohler of Bowerston; Tom (Patricia) Hall of Carrollton who was like a son to him; 11 grandchildren, Michelle Standiford, Duane Wilson, Renee (Carlos) Rodriguez, Spencer (Sarah) Wilson, Sarah (Tom) Brocious, Nicole Yosick, Noel (Darrin) Muraski, Andy Yosick, Gabrielle Muraski, Alexander (Deanna) Muraski, Jack Vallery; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Raymond (Genevieve) McCullough of Clarks Mills, Pa.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dear feline companion, Runt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanne Leatherman, and three sisters, Marion Hill, Ruth Ellen Cramer and Margaret Willaman.
Services for George, officiated by Pastor Charles Kettering, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 7, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Interment will follow in Conotton Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Those wishing to honor George's memory by a charitable contribution are encouraged to do so to the .
