90, of Bolivar, died Tuesday June 24, 2014 at 4:15 a.m. in Meadow Winds Nursing Home at Massillon. Born Sept. 1, 1928 in Louisville she was the daughter of the late Dwight and Margaret (Corby) Sluss. Phyllis was a 1941 graduate of Louisville High School where she was class valadictorian. She received her R.N. From the Mercy School of Nursing and was employed at the old Mercy Hospital, then the Timken-Mercy Hospital for many years. She later retired from Visiting Nurses. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity at Bolivar (Zoar).
Her husband, Charles D. "Chuck" Stephens, whom she married April 21, 1946, preceded her in death Sept. 18, 2012. She is survived by her children, Kathy Fuhrman of Tallahasse, Fla., Mark A. (Cheryl) Stephens of Rittman and Cindy A. (Dave) Miller of Canton; three grandsons, Adam Fuhrman, Brian Fuhrman and Thomas Stephens; two granddaughters, Jennifer Stephens and Julia Miller; a great-,granddaughter, Olivia Fuhrman; and two brothers, Edward (Esther) Sluss of Louisville and Jack (Alice) Sluss of Lower Burrell, Pa. In addttion to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son, David.
Funeral services will be held Thursday June 26, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Lebold-Smith Funeral Home at 248 Park Ave. Bolivar. Deacon Lyn Houze will officiate and burial will follow in St. Stephen's Cemetery at Bolivar. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
