Thelma B. Starkey
93, of Bolivar, died Sunday July 13, 2014 at 12:03 p.m. in Hennis Care Centre at Bolivar following a period of declining health. Born March 14, 1921 in East Sparta she was the daughter of the late Elmus C. and Vera (Thompson) Norris. She was a 1939 graduate of Bolivar High School. She attended Ohio University and was a graduate of Kent State University. Thelma began her teaching career in 1945 and retired as a teacher from Dover East Elementary in 1989. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ at Bolivar and its Women's Guild.
Her husband of 62 years, Charles M. Starkey, preceded her in death on Sept. 24, 2005. Surviving are her children Mallika (Carol) Albert of Florida, Sharon (Bill) Schartiger of Dover, Janet Shaddick of Pa., Duane (Mary Jo) Starkey of Athens and Dean Starkey of Florida; and seven grandchildren Tova Sarrow, Abby and Megan Watt, Michael, Matthew, David and Megan Starkey. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by three brothers Cary, Paul and Gail Norris.
Funeral services will be held Friday July 18, 2014 at 11 a.m. in St. John's United Church of Christ at Bolivar. Rev. Melodie Rezac will officiate and burial will follow in Fort Laurens Cemetery at Bolivar. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Lebold-Smith Funeral Home at 248 Park Ave. Bolivar and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. For those unable to attend please visit the funeral home web site to share a memory. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County or St. John's United Church of Christ at Bolivar. The family would also like to express their appreciation and sincere thanks for the excellent care that Thelma received while residing at Hennis Care Centre at Bolivar.

Wow. Mrs. Starkey was my 5th grade teacher in 1967 at Bolivar. We had just moved there and she was very supportive. She was so very proper and ladylike, I always have tried to emulate her. She was very special and my sympathy goes out to her loved ones.
